AI SAFETY HAS SUDDENLY BECOME A MAJOR GLOBAL CONVERSATION For years, the biggest question in Artificial Intelligence has been: How powerful can AI become? Today, another question is becoming equally important: How do we ensure that powerful AI remains safe, controllable and beneficial to humanity? As AI systems become more autonomous—capable of making decisions, executing tasks and accessing digital tools—the concerns around cybersecurity, manipulation, accountability and human control are growing. AI safety is no longer just a discussion for technology companies and researchers. Governments, universities, businesses and global institutions are now paying serious attention. The future of AI is not only about building more intelligent systems. It is also about building systems we can trust. And Africa must not be left out of this global conversation. We must move beyond simply consuming AI technologies and actively participate in shaping how AI is developed, governed and deployed responsibly.
